Most likely when they were invented. The Porteguese began trading with Japan in 1548, followed by the Dutch in 1600. Tremendous exchange of goods took place. There are Japanese paintings of the Portuguese in the 1500s and European copies of Japanese works in 1600s woodcuts and books.
