Good old Jack Hillier has an interesting commentary on ukiyo-e in Europe in the introduction to his J Prints: A New Approach. Japanese prints were brought to Europe quite early, but what people made of them--that's the crux!

: Most likely when they were invented. The Porteguese began trading with Japan in 1548, followed by the Dutch in 1600. Tremendous exchange of goods took place. There are Japanese paintings of the Portuguese in the 1500s and European copies of Japanese works in 1600s woodcuts and books.

: : When were Ukiyo-e prints introduced into Europe?
: : please help
