Remembering from my history of art, the very bright, unshaded, pattern oriented coloring of the prints was influencial to Van Gogh and other European painters. I think they were influenced more by the composition of Japanese prints than the color. They enjoyed how objects are rendered in a simplified, flattened way and the freedom from strict perspective. Also the assymetry of the prints intrigued European painters. There is a book called "Japonisme", I think, that really illustrates and explains these points with side by side examples of prints and paintings.
