Hi Ray,

The scene in the triptych is from a kabuki play based on the Tale of Heike, the chronicle of the Gempei Wars in the 1180s. On the right you have Taira no Kiyomori, who at this time holds the reins of power, though he has officially taken religious orders (thus the shaved head.)

In the middle panel, beside Kiyomori's consort, is Shigemori, Kiyomori's son and best advisor. Shigemori tends to be the reasoned realist in contrast to Kiyomori's emotional impulsiveness and drive to take immediate military action--sounds a bit like an administration we all know... It's after Shigemori dies that things really go to pot and Kiyomori goes to excesses that ultimately ruin his family's position.

On the left panel is Munemori, another of Kiyomori's sons, who will be one of the major generals in the ensuing war, ultimately losing his life.

Is this something closer to what you were looking for by way of an answer?

Andy

: I posted this triptych some time ago, but was hoping that I would be able to get more information on the print. Maybe some new members out there? There is a close up of the block that I think may have some clues as well as the complete triptych. I have seen his shade lives other prints with the figure that seems to be hiding armor under a red cloth, must be a famous scene in history.
: ...thank you....Ray
