I believe the painting you are referring to is Utamaro's Midnight Revelry. It had the same affect on me when I walked into that particular room, a really great scene. Sometimes ebay sellers have small cheap copies of it.

"I was particularly astonished by an Utamaro I painting that filled a large wall in one of the rooms of the Freer (I'd guess, about 10 x 25 feet)."
