: We just inherited two paintings. The first is is by Toshihide painted in 1893, from the famous storly of Chushingura. The second is by Getsuko painted in 1902 from the famous storly of forty-seven Ronin. Can anyone tell me something about these.

Jackie,

Are you sure they are paintings and not woodblock prints?

Arnold has already given you some information about Yoshihide. As for "Getsuko", I believe it is an artist whose name is usually transcribed (and pronounced) as Gekko (1859-1920). His prints series Gishi Shiju-shichi Zu (Portraits of the 47 faithful samurai) was published in 1902-1903, and if you search for the Japanese title in Google or another search engine, you'll find a number of images to compare with your picture.

Best regards,
Hans Olof
