Karl sent me some high resolution jpeg images of his print by email. After comparing them with a known original, from Matthi Forrer's "Hokusai - Prints and Drawings" (1991), I had to let him know that he has a reproduction.
Here is the proof that these 2 prints came from different block sets. The original is on the left, Karl's print is on the right:
