: Does anyone have fuller information about Japanese Print Association member Hide Kawanishi (1894-1965)? That is all that is listed in my copy of Blakemore. I bought a copy of "A Bar-Girl at Kobe" yesterday and would like to find other prints by this artist. Thanks

Kawanishi Hide is listed in various standard references:
(1) Merritt & Yamada: Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints: 1900-1975 (Honolulu 1992) p. 61
(2) Merritt: Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints (Honolulu 1990), p. 230
(3) Roberts: A Dictionary of Japanese Artists (New York 1976), p. 73

Highlights: Born in Kobe; declined to work in the family shipping business and instead managed a post office; self-taught; exhibited with various print associations from 1923 onwards; some of his prints represent valuable records of the city of Kobe during his time; known especially for his 1962 series "One Hundred Views of Kobe (Kobe hyakkei); other series included "Twelve Customs of Shôwa Beauties" (Shôwa bijin fûzoku jûnitai, 1929), "Scenes of the Twelve Months in Kobe" (Kobe jûnikagetsu fûkei, 1931) and "Scenes from a Port Town (1941); awarded the Hyôgo Prefecture Culture Prize in 1949 and the Kobe Shinbun Peace Prize in 1962.
