Nils,

I couldn't locate any prints from the series Mita sanjûroku sen, but I found another print with an inset signature that looks like it could be similar to the one you described:

insetsig.jpg

This is from Kunisada's series Imayô sanjûni sô (1859). I found it in Sebastian Izzard's Kunisada's World (Japan Society, 1993), p 180). Unfortunately, there is no information on the inset signature.

Best regards,

Hans Olof

: I have got a print signed "Utagawa Toyokuni hitsu" showing a woman and a man eating and drinking. The title of the series is, as far as I can make out, something like "Mita sanjuro kusen", which I translated as "A comparison of 36 selected poems".
: The date seal on the margin is partly trimmed, but the rest of it looks like one used between 1852 to 1858.
: The print has an inset showing a bowl and a flower, signed ???-SHIGE with a diamond shaped seal similar to one used by Hiroshige, but the signature does not look like Hiroshige's.
: Does anyone know such a series by Toyokuni III?
