Hope, the following information from Anne F. Clapp, Curatorial Care of
Works of Art on Paper, clarifies the situation:
"Bookworms, white or pale yellow wormlike larvae of the "drugstore"
beetle and of the "cigaret" beetle, eat the glue of the bindings and
covers of books. When they become adults, they emerge, leaving small
round holes filled with book powder. The presence of powder is evidence
of active infestion. If the holes are empty, they were probably made
during a past attack. In this case, the book needs no treatment."
