: I'm still keeping track of modern POP-music. But my experience with ukiyo-e prints is similar to yours. Although I also tend to enjoy the occasional Sharaku and Utamaro to. In fact we're dealing here with the relationship between art, esthetics and our own cultural backgrounds. I wonder how someone from Japan would have reacted on our previous e-mail in this newsgroup.

Theo,
I've gone back in time in regards to my musical tastes with old jazz and
blues as well as classical music. Strangely enough, unlike ukiyo-e, I prefer older
music from the Baroque era, much more reminiscent of Haranobu etc.. In regards to
Japanese people and Ukiyo-e, I have a sample group of one. This person does not think
about Ukiyo-e as particularly good art. He said that it was good for the economy of Japan that
westerners wanted this thing when Japan was imporverished. Obviously, this attitude is not
true of everyone of Japanese descent. As for the news group, I hav'nt seen anyone with an obviously
Japanese name. If you would like to continue this conversation in more detail, my email is mgj93294@glaxowellcome.com
If you don't get through the first time try again. The company has a nasty firewall up.

Michael
