: I received a painting on paper of a daylily that had earlier been sold by the Newman Gallery in Philadelphia and that was labled as being painted by Baiitsu Yamamoto. I know Newman didn't sell junk, so I am wondering who Baiitsu Yamamoto was and when he painted? Thanks, John

There is a listing in Roberts (A Dictionary of Japanese Artists on page 7 for a Baiitsu (1783-1856), the artist’s name (gô of Yamamoto Shunryô. He was a Nanga-style painter born in Nagoya. Studied Chinese painting. Moved to Kyoto in 1803 and studied with Yamada Kyûjô and Yamamoto Rantei. He was considered to be, along with Nakabayashi Chikutô, one of the two best Nanga painters working in Nagoya when he returned there in 1854. Produced many paintings and apparently worked quite rapidly, painting in a natural manner. He also taught many pupils. He is known for his confident compositions and clarity of colors. Many of his works still exist.
