I too, recently found e-bay, and was struck (and then outraged) at some of the claims being made for what are obviously reproductions.
However, I adopted the strategy of ignoring anything that was really famous and was probably reproduced either by hand or mechanically at one time or another. I'd only buy a Hiroshige or Hokusai from a known dealer. And checking out what else the person has put up for sale, and checking the feedback.
As others have found, I too have bought a few lesser known things that I think were good buys.
All that said, E-bay doesn't have Caveat Emptor on every page for nothing!
Hoping to meet you on e-bay as well as here at the Shogun auctions.

: I've just stumbled on ebay, the online auction site. There are lots of Hiroshige prints selling there, but I can't tell whether they are originals or copies. One group claims to be 1870 Hiroshige, but that doesn't seem to make sense, and the prints themselves look to be much later. Can anyone out there offer some advice to steer me through? What's the best way to tell an original when all you have is a computer scan? Are these ebay prints originals or copies?
