: Note to Gary and all,
: I'm sorry if I overstepped the bounds of this page. I don't want to be seen as the proverbial "critical guest".
: In point of fact though, I never once said that books were cut up for the Shogun Auctions. I do know that book plates are sold there, but I don't at all know whether they were found individually or made to be that way (I sincerely hope it is the former though.) My comments were towards sellers of prints in general, not any in particular. Some of the worst culprits in these attacks against their culture are the Japanese themselves, who systematically break books up for sale to tourists.
: At any rate, I'll say no more about this matter, and move on to topics I feel a little more positively passionate about.
: Sorry to have been a bother,

: : Gary,
: : This is from your FAQ:
: : "What discussion subjects are inappropriate here?
: : Please, no buying & selling and no discussions of specific people, collectors, or dealers by name."
: : Could you please clarify in what way Dan's views on cutting up ehon are inappropiate? I may not share his views, but to me such a discussion seems highly appropiate in a group like this.

Dan,
You are a valued contributor to this forum. I personally
appreciate your taking the time to add your opinions,
comments and enthusiasm.
If I can just comment on the subject of bookplates, there are prints
that exist that are no longer in book form. It
would be nice to have a book intact, I am not sure that
anyone would dispute that. The fact is, however, that
there are bookplates that have long lost their original
homes. In my opinion, they are beautiful, they are
masterpieces in themsleves and they are valuable.
They are bought and sold by people who have
integrity and love Japanese prints.
As for books that are intact or reasonably intact,
unlike you, I do not see this issue as black & white.
As a dealer, I don't only see books that are in mint
condition, but also ones with covers missing, pages missing
or severely damaged, very worn and held together by a thread.
I can buy the book and restore it, I can salvage the
prints that remain in good condition...there are any
number of ways that I can approach an acquisition.
