After what you had to say about your print, I believe we have established that the two main elements of the comparison are courtesans and comical poems. As for the possible overtones conveyed by the choice of kanji, we are still at a loss - unless John or someone else has come up with an idea, while I'm writing this. I agree that with John's interpretation, the characters ought to be reversed. Maybe we should combine your suggestion that the sen character alludes to the name of the artist, with John's idea: "Sen(chô) fashion"?
As Senchô did illustrate books as well, we could even take it a step further. If it was one of his books, senryû could be interpreted as "comical poems in Senchô style". Or am I too far out, now?
