: Could anyone provide guidance on how I might prepare a wrinkled woodblock print so it can be matted and framed? The print appears to have been rolled up and placed in storage for many years. As a result it has wrinkle marks about every inch or so in the direction of rolling and won't lay flat. I would perfer not to mount the print to a backing board because the paper is still in very good condition. I was considering placing the print between to pieces of plexiglass and then framing it like any other print. Would this be dammaging to the print over time? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Hello Chuck,
I have several prints which wrinkled from being mounted
incorrectly when framed - before I acquired them.
I have been utilizing the services of a professional,
certified framer for the protection of my Japanese print
acquisitions.
In relation to my wrinkle problem, before framing he utilized
a special press which is for this purpose. While it did
not make the wrinkling completely disappear, the results
were a dramatic improvement.
I would advise that if you have a special problem as you have
described, that you may fare well by contacting a framer in
your area that has the qualifications AND knows what they
are doing. If you are going to display a print I think that
it is worth it in the long run to have it professionally protected.
I hope that this helps in some way.
