I recently got a print (from Shogun Gallery) by Toyokuni III showing a man (actor?) bust portrait.
The series title reads (to me) "Shichi i-ro-ha Shui" (7 i-ro-ha alphabet Shui?). There is an open scroll beside the series cartouche with the title (something I can't read) and "Ishikawa Goemon" (a figure in various plays). Also on the scroll are depicted 7 different bold characters, all for "ichi" (number one).
The meaning of all this is very confusing to me - can anyone help?
Nils
