: Steven,

: Hashimoto, Okiie (1899-1993)
: Graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1924; member of various print and art societies; studied with and befriended the important 'sosaku hanga' artist Hiratsuka, Un'ichi and began making prints around 1936; first exhibited at the Japanese Print Association in 1937; taught and was an assistant principal at Tokyo First Women's High School until 1955, when he retired and devoted himself full-time to printmaking; the subject of Japanese gardens was very common in Hashimoto's work, for which he produced a wide range of views of garden details (such as various prints depicting the famous temple rock garden at Ryûanji).

: Ono, Tadashige (1909-1990)
: Graduated from Dept. of Japanese and Chinese languages at Hôsei University Higher Normal School; studied under Okada Saburôsuke (1869-1939) at Hongô Painting Institute 1924-27; member of various art societies; made prints between c. 1929-75; very active throughout his career in support of proletarian art movements; exhibited at the Proletarian Art Exhibition in Tokyo in 1929; early work was partly influenced by German Expressionism of the 1920s; also issued books on the history of Japanese printmaking; in his own works he developed a fine color sense and printed with simplified, stylized forms to achieve an effect reminiscent of textured stained glass; he also experimented with light opaque colors printed over dark base paper colors; his later works (1955-75) have earned him a growing reputation as a somewhat neglected, slightly out of the mainstream, but historically important 'sosaku hanga' artist.
