: Yes, cats were a popular subject in traditional Japanese printmaking (ukiyo-e), either as the main subject or as a secondary element in the design. The master artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was particularly fond of cats.

: A few modern Japanese print artists also included cats among their subjects. The most obvious example was Tomoo Inagaki (1902-1980), who specialized in the subject.
