It is a good idea to open any picture frame every ten-or-so years and inspect the work of art for signs of deterioration. That is especially so with a print such as you describe: a valuable print that was mounted and framed "many years ago" (as you put it). The chances are excellent that it was framed without using acid-free mat and backer. Ultra-violet filtering plexiglass (which reduces greatly the degree of fading which will ineviatbly occur if the work is "on display")was not in use "many years ago." Attend to inspection without delay. Even if everything looks O.K. and the mat and backer test "acid-free" using an acid-testing marker pen, you will want to change the glass to a UV-filtering sheet.
