: Last year I purchased a woodblock print that I have
: since found reproduced on a Japanese postcard. The
: card identifies it only as "Nanga picture by Gizan."
: I have been unable to find any information on either
: the Nanga school of art, or the artist Gizan. If
: anyone can provide any information on either of
: these, or can direct me to appropriate literary
: sources, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

The book 'Images of the Floating World' by Richard Lane (1978 - ISBN: 0-88168-889-4) says the following about Nanga:
nanga (bunjin-ga): literairy men's painting in Chinese style, favored by Japanese dilettantes and scholars from the mid 18th century.

I couldn't find anything about Gizan. Alas!

Good luck, Theo de Kreijger
