I found the following information in a flier circulated by Kappy Hendricks in March 1996, on the occasion of one of her regular exhibitions of "The Hendricks Art Collection", this one "Featuring Sadao Watanabe -- Original Stencil Prints--Japan's Famous Christian Artist ! (1913-1996":
"Watanabe died in January, 1996, leaving an important body of work as his legacy. His subjects are all biblical themes from the Old and New Testament. His technique was Katazome--a unique craft of dyeing textiles and printing on paper using cut-out paper stencils. In 1947, he entered the First National Exhibition of Folk Art in Japan and received the first prize for his work, "The Story of Ruth." In 1958, he received the Japan Print Academy Prize for "Girls and Quails." In 1969-70, he traveled to the United States to teach stencil printing. He exhibited in Brussels, Germany and the United States in the early 1970s. (...) His works are included in the collections of: New York Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Chicago Art Institute, Vatican Museum of Religious Art, British Museum and others."
