Hi Rob,
That was a common method of joining two prints in a
vertical orientation, such as, a Kakemono-e (vertical
diptych). If that is what you have, that is the way they
were made, and glued (rice paste) overlapping will not diminish
the prints value. Along those same lines...if the
two prints have been trimmed so that the continuity
between the two is disturbed (lines don't meet, etc.) then
the desirability and value will be effected.
