: : : Wouldn't it be great if there was a database on
: : : the Web that had ukiyo-e artist signatures in
: : : some kind of graphic display? (Any enterprising
: : : web designers out there??). My copy of "A Guide
: : : to Japenese Prints and Their Subject Matter" by
: : : Basil Stewart has an excellent signature chart,
: : : but this book was published in 1922, and seems
: : : lacking. Are there any reference materials on
: : : ukiyo-e signatures and publisher seals someone
: : : may care to recomend?
: : The book 'Japanese Art Signatures' by James Self and Nobuko Hirose, Bamboo Publishing, London, 1987, has a good selection of facsimile signatures of, among others, print artists together with a good section on how to decipher those not supplied. 'A Dictionary of Japanese Artists' by Laurence Roberts, Weatherhill, Tokyo & New York, 1976 lists pretty much all the artists you are likely to meet together with their alternative art names and biographical details but does not give facsimile signatures. Richard Lane's 'Images from the Floating World' Oxford University Press, 1978, gives a good selection of publisher's marks culled from various sources including Binyon & Sexton and B W Robinson's 'Kuniyoshi'.
: I know a source where you can get Richard Lane's "Images from the Floating World" at a very reasonable price. E-mail me if you are interested. CpoGordon@aol.com
