: : Is there a resource on Kuniyoshi's prints portraying actors in "The Cloudy Chapters of Genji"? Do we know if the woodblock prints reflect actual scenes from the book or are they more loose interpretations of the characters?

BW Robinson's book 'Kuniyoshi - The Warrior Prints', Phaidon press, 1982, lists Genji kumo ukiyo-e awase, 'Ukiyo-e comparisons of the cloudy chapters of Genji' as his Series No. S.45 and gives names, numbers and descriptions of the 54 prints with six supplemental prints.. These were produced during a time of severe censureship relating to kabuki theatrical prints and, although the actors can often be recognised, this is sometimes conjectural and cannot always be related to specific performances.
