The following information was taken from "Index of Japanese Painters", compiled by the Society of Friends of Eastern Art (Charles E. Tuttle Co., fourth printing 1968):
Hokuba (1771-1844) Family name: Hoshino. Familiar Name: Arisaka Gorohachi. Pseudonyms (art names): Teisai, Hokuba, Shunshuntei, Shunshunsai, Shuen. School: Ukiyo-e school. Pupil of Hokusai. Life and Career: Lived in Edo. It is said that he helped Buncho in colouring pictures. Illustrated many story books.
Richard Lane, in his "Images From The Floating World: The Japanese Print" (1978), additionally states that he was a "ukiyo-e painter, print artist and illustrator; an outstanding pupil of Hokusai; designed many surimono and illustrated a number of kyoka books; also known for his figure paintings" and "[i]llustrated books by Hokuba include Kyoka maku-no-uchi (2 vols., 1802) and Kyoka shi-kishi Ogura-gata (1 vol., ca. 1830)."
